Buddha Purnima – Significance, History & Celebration

Buddha Purnima, otherwise also remember as Vesak, is the main celebration for the devotees of Buddhism across the world. This promising day marks the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha. The celebration falls on the first full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Vaisakha. Which compares to April-May in the Gregorian schedule. This year, Buddha Purnima celebration will be on the sixteenth May in the year 2022.

Significance and History

Even though the date and season of Lord Buddha’s birth and passing are uncertain, it is presumed that he lived somewhere between the sixth and fourth century BC. His origins lie in Lumbini, Nepal. Legend has it that he was prophesied to be an incredible lord or to have extraordinary wisdom sage before he entered the world. Having grown up with princely luxury, Siddhartha was spared the difficulties of human existence until he was in his late 20s. In the wake of illness, old age, and death, the 29-year-old sovereign decided to leave behind his illustrious royal residence in search of the reason for all affliction.

As the years went by, he examined a wide range of lessons but was unable to find freedom.  Until one night he dove into deep contemplation and awoke full of all the answers he was seeking. This is the manner by which at 35 years old, Siddhartha Gautama turned into the Buddha or the Awakened One. For the leftover of his life, he taught the Dharma to lead others along the way of Enlightenment. Gautama Buddha died at 80 years old in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.
